Now, it might seem like we’re just playing with words trying to find what similar words mean. But, the thing is, knowing the difference between being tired and sleepy actually matters. When you can really tell the difference between these feelings, you get to know their causes and also treat some disorders that they might have caused.

Sometimes, you might even get troubled when you’re not sleep deprived or take too much caffeine but somehow you still feel tired. This is one of the reasons you need to tell the difference between being tired and just sleepy. Fine, you might take a nap or a cup of coffee to make you stop feeling sleepy, but then, that tiredness still stays.

It can be frustrating sometimes. So, how about we try and walk you through the difference, shall we?

What Does It Mean To Feel Sleepy?

A lot of people actually misinterpret the meaning of being sleepy. When you’re sleepy or drowsy, it usually means you have a strong desire to sleep.

Picture this, you’re having a burger and sitting in your favorite chair with your feet up. You’re all relaxed and cozy. At that point, your eyelids start to get heavy, and as they close, you go in a bit deeper. That right there is you being sleepy.

Basically, the longer you stay awake, the sleepier you get. A chemical known as adenosine starts to build in your brain, telling you that you need to sleep. Adenosine levels build up in your body throughout the day, that’s why you feel sleepier in the evenings and at night while reading a book or watching a show on TV.

So, how do get rid of that sleepy feeling? Well, it’s obvious, isn’t it? You sleep! And, by the time you are fully awake, you feel refreshed and don’t really feel sleepy anymore.

Now, How Does That Differ From Being Tired?

Being tired differs a lot from feeling sleepy. When you’re tired, you feel it deep in your muscles and bones, your limbs start getting heavy; you basically feel like you were in a race. You find it hard to go by the day both mentally and physically.

Feeling tired does not only come from you overworking yourself; sometimes, it is associated with other illnesses like cancer and even anemia. And, though sleep might seem like the best answer, being tired doesn’t cause you to doze off.

When you feel tired, you might sit and just rest or even close your eyes for a bit but you most often don’t sleep. Hence, sleep might not relieve the sense of being tired.

To Wrap It Up

Now that you can tell the difference between being tired and sleepy, you can easily pinpoint what you need to get out of whatever state you’re in. Now, either of these feelings could have an underlying cause. So, you need to get treatments if need be.

Do you get insufficient sleep? Do you feel extremely tired for no reason? Then you might just need to go see a physician to know what’s happening.

  2. I associate feeling sleepy with contentedness. Tiredness, on the other hand, is what you feel after a long, difficult day at work. Tiredness is also that feeling that creeps up on you when you’re neglecting to take proper care of yourself and ignoring what your body is trying to tell you.

    I’m guilty of the latter!
